The image on the front of the card showed a hulking, bark-covered creature with a perfectly polished, blank mask of wood in place of a face. The only indication the card depicted Yina was that the arms of the creature hadn’t been fully covered in bark yet, showing the colorful tattoos that covered her arms. Behind her, the tree with its silver leaves stood watch over her.

Yina had long ago finished dinner and was staring at me as I worked. The card in my hand glowed with a soft silver light, and she was staring at it like an orphan being offered real food for the first time in her life.

Hiding a smile, I leaned forward and handed her the card.

She read the front of the card quickly before flipping it over and examining the back. Then she flipped it back over and read it through again.

“Are you trying to say something to me with this bit about not making a shell?” she asked, not looking in my direction. She didn’t sound angry, which I kind of expected. Instead, she sounded thoughtful.

“No,” I replied firmly, “I don’t know you well enough to have any opinion on something like that. I just tapped into your energy. It was, in a way, you that designed the card. I was just the vehicle for its creation.”

Yina made no response, but a moment later, a thick layer of bark began growing over her, starting from the center of her chest. I watched, impressed, as the bark turned her from an intimidating, powerful, dangerous-looking woman into . . . an even more intimidating, powerful, and dangerous force of nature itself. Her human face had been replaced by a polished, blank mask of wood, with no humanlike features, making her look very menacing as she turned to stare in my direction.

Her arms, which were big to begin with, were now twice as thick. As she stood, I saw she was at least a foot taller—and possibly a foot or two wider as well. She looked fucking dangerous.

“Damn . . .” I said, awe in my voice.

“This is pretty amazing, Jake,” she said softly, her voice easily carrying through her new wooden facemask. As I watched, she began to stretch and twist her body. “I can feel the armor, but it’s almost like it isn’t there at all. I’ve never worn armor this light yet so powerful before in my life. This would be a priceless artifact for anyone in Storm’s Den.”

The slightest drop of divine power returned to me when she activated the card, which reminded me that I wasn’t just doing all of this out of the goodness of my heart. I was gaining something, too. And yet, when I saw how amazed Yina was, that just didn’t seem like a big consideration at the moment. My cards really could help people. Yina had just gained a set of armor that would make the richest cultivators burn with envy. All it had cost me was a couple hours of my time and a bit of my divine power.
